Würzburg – As internationally renowned specialist for highquality yacht floorings, Wolz Nautic headquartered in the Lower Franconian district of Gaukönigshofen has just won an order for the production of the entire wooden deck for what will be the world‘s largest and most advanced research and expedition vessel – REV.

After intensive negotiations, the team responsible for the REV project decided to use Wolz Nautic‘s innovative products and developments on the vessel.

This includes, among other things, the use of a long-term tested, double-modified wood type for the decking. Together with a weight- and noise-reducing 3D cork as levelling material, Wolz Nautic‘s ability to deliver a sustainable overall system by virtue of its products ultimately proved the decisive factor behind the award of contract.

In addition to the approx. 2815 square metres of wooden decking, Wolz Nautic will also be manufacturing handrails with a total length of around 876 linear metres.

REV project

The REV project is a unique undertaking in all respects. Behind the project is the norwegian businessman Kjell Inge RØKKE, who has vowed to donate at least 50% of his fortune to philanthropic causes through the Bill and Melinda Gates Giving Pledge.

The vessel will explicitly serve as a research and expedition ship, as well being available for charter as a superyacht. This means that particular research institutes or universities will be able to use it and perform research in the spheres of exploration and protection of the oceans as well as climate development, etc. For more information, visit https://revocean.org.

„Looking into the future, we see the REV project as an initial impulse and the system used in it as a highly sustainable solution for further projects“, says Michael Wolz, managing partner of Wolz Nautic. By using a new alternative, the company aims to win over other owners or shipyards as well, and thus make a key contribution in terms of sustainability in yacht deck building.

Besides its broad range of conventional materials for yacht deck construction, Wolz Nautic already began some time ago to use other materials and develops sustainable wooden deck solutions.

„We are convinced that this will not be the last project of this kind. Indeed we expect to see yacht owners increasingly going for sustainable solutions in the future as well“, emphasizes Martin Rückert, Head of Business Development at Wolz Nautic.

The current sustainable deck solution comes very close to the properties and visual appearance of teak, and would for the first time be an alternative crafted from natural wood that is also degradable.

Sustainability at Wolz Nautic

Among other activities, Wolz Nautic started a cooperation with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and joined the „Wood Forever Pact“ in 2017. 2019 saw this initiative integrated into the „Sustainable Yachting Network“. This is an initiative brought into being by Prince Albert II, aimed at building up a network of members from the yachting industry committed to the responsible use of resources in yacht building.

„The joint meeting and personal conversation with Prince Albert II in Dresden underline the importance this topic has for our company“, says André Hofmann, Marketing Manager at Wolz Nautic.

„The use of wood in the decking on the REV constitutes an ideal project for Wolz Nautic to make a valuable contribution in the sphere of sustainability.“

By linking this project with our involvement in the „Sustainable Yachting Network“, we are building a bridge to the concept of acting with responsibility that is firmly anchored in our corporate mission statement“, adds Hofmann.
