Primetime is Showtime

ALEXSEAL launches its HS Prime Coat 435 helping applicators to detect imperfections, to save one layer and to simplify the paint job

The new Alexseal high solid product unites benefits of finish primer and show coat. With these characteristics it is the perfect two-in-one product for priming and showcoating before applying the final topcoat and comes along with a bundle of functionalities making the application process faster and more efficient.

Detecting Imperfections – creating perfection

Painting a new-build yacht is a complex process involving several layers. After applying a corrosion protection primer, the uneven hull and superstructure are transformed into a smooth surface using fairing compounds and high-build surfacers. In conventional yacht new-building, this is usually followed by an epoxy-based finish primer, and the topcoat is applied afterwards. The high-gloss topcoat shall reveal unevenness that was not visible on the more matt finish primer. Until now, this meant that the first layer of topcoat had to be sacrificed to detect and rework the imperfections.

Saving a layer – boosting the paint job

With this high solids HS Prime Coat 435, this sacrificial layer of topcoat is no longer necessary, as even the smallest imperfections are visible in the glossy finish of the prime coat and can be reworked. The prime coat, with its polyurethane-based formulation, not only offers detective functionality—other parameters also ensure that the painting process is optimized, and the painters’ work becomes faster and easier.

  • Prime Coat comes along with a good hiding power at a dry film thickness of approximately 50 µm.
  • The lower layer thickness leads to faster drying and higher stability in comparison to standard epoxy primers.
  • Formulated with an impressive proportion of high-solid components, it leads to less VOC emission and less shrinkage while drying and is easy to sand.
  • Available in White and Gray to be a perfect base for all color shades of topcoat.

HS Prime Coat 435 can be used as an undercoat before topcoating, either on top of Super Build 302 or Finish Primer 442. It is the ideal choice when applicators want to use the primer as an optical control layer at the same time. The new HS Prime Coat 435 has been tested with selected customers since 2024 and is already implemented in paint system recommendation throughout Europe.
