What large spaces need is a suitably imposing TV screen. And when the screen is not in use, you need it to disappear. For H+M, the leading manufacturer in such lift technology, 60“ was no longer enough. So at the suggestion of H+M Electronic Systems, okugi Lift Systems has developed the Sumo 103“. This hasbeen used for the first time in one of the largest yacht projects to be completed this year. The lift raises and turns the 250 kg, 2.57 m wide screen
as though it were as light as a feather. This impressive feat is possible thanks to an extremely quiet hydraulic lift drive, coupled with electric rotational and locking drives.
The hydraulic drives exert a force of around 3 tonnes on the short lift arm, which is hidden out of sight in the deckhead. The screen is then lifted up by means of the rotational and locking drives. Previously, TV monitor lifts have been raised directly by electric motors which have to be housed in the lift system – with the Sumo, the motor operates a hydraulics system. So the motor can be sited elsewhere, with good sound insulation. The next Sumo generation, which is now on trial, will work with water instead of hydraulic oil. Once the screen is folded down, there is no „black hole” left showing in the deckhead as a patented drive closes off the deck opening with a plate which fits into the space. The lift has an installation depth of approximately 400 mm and weighs 750 kg. To give you a true idea of its incredible size, we invited Vitali Root, the head design engineer at okugi, to do a photo session for us.
